Exploring the history, value and possibilities of Indian Philosophical ideas

Philosophical ideas are always about exploring the world, answering perennial questions and improving the ways we live our lives. Global philosophy reaches into the world’s resources to answer these questions: these projects are about helping to explore the potential of Indian ideas on a wider scale.

Dr Jessica Frazier, University of Oxford

Jessica Frazier is a Lecturer at the University of Oxford, exploring philosophical ideas from both the Indian and Western traditions. Her first book (Reality, Religion and Passion) was on links between phenomenology, ontology and ethics in early modern Indian Vedānta, on one hand and twentieth century German Phenomenology on the other. She went on to write on the nature of the Self in Indian classical thought (in Hindu Worldviews), bringing it into conversation with contemporary theories of body, mind, and agency. Her forthcoming books explore Gadamer’s idea of Being and the way that humanity fits within it, and the metaphysical issues involved in arguing for an ‘ultimate’ reality. Having been a Founding Editor of the Journal of Hindu Studies, she teaches Hinduism, Indian Philosophy, Theories of Religion and other topics, and is a frequent contributor to media on topics across global philosophy and intellectual history; she can often be found on the BBC in In Our Time.
